ADHD and Neurodivergent Friendly GP Care

ADHD and neurodivergent friendly GP care
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults, often leading to challenges with attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. It can significantly impact daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life. Timely and supportive care is essential to help individuals manage their symptoms and reach their potential.
One of the biggest challenges for neurodivergent patients, particularly those with ADHD, has been long wait times to see specialists for assessment and ongoing care. This can cause significant stress and delays in treatment adjustments. With ADHD affecting around 11% of Australian children (higher than the global average of 5.3%) and increasing recognition in adults, there is a growing need for accessible, community-based care.
From September 2025, GPs in NSW will be able to play a greater role in ADHD care, including prescribing stimulant medications for patients that have previously received their scripts from their psychiatrist or paediatrician. The assessment and initiating treatment in eligible patients following additional accredited training by GPs will roll out in 2026. This important change aims to reduce wait times, improve access, and provide more comprehensive, continuous care within general practice.
At KFMP and WFMP, several GPs, including Dr Timms, Dr Nguyen, Dr Urch and Dr Hoffman are experienced in managing ADHD in both children and adults. Several of our GPs will also plan to take up the offer of completing additional training to be able to diagnose and initiate medication from next year.
Please note that a component of the regulations around these changes in ADHD is that KFMP/WFMP is where you receive all of your General Practice care. We are currently accepting new patients, and are happy to look after you and your family, however, if you do not wish to have KFMP/WFMP look after all of your GP care, please speak with your usual GP about whether they plan on taking up training, or about other referral options.
If you have a stable ADHD treatment plan or are considering an assessment, please discuss this with your GP to see if our team-based approach is suitable for you. We are committed to providing neurodivergent-friendly care that is patient-centred, timely, and supportive.
